Our School - Healthy Together Geelong

The Healthy Together Achievement Program was jointly developed by the Department of Education and Training and the Department of Health and Human Services. It is based on the World Health Organization’s health promoting schools model.

Healthy students learn better. Children who feel included and supported in the school community become more engaged. Supporting children’s physical health, social and emotional development, in addition to their academic learning, gives them the foundations to grow up healthy, resilient and achieve their full potential.

At Surfside Primary School we are proud to be members of the Healthy Together Victoria Achievement Program and are committed to creating a healthy school.

We already have advanced standing in three areas: Healthy Eating and Oral Health, Sun Protection and Physical Activity and are well on our way to achieving further recognition.

Our school values – Respect, Honesty, Team work and Achievement, guide underpin all our actions and decisions.

School policies are in place to ensure that at Surfside we provide the optimal environment, program and curriculum to foster the health and wellbeing of our students, staff and wider school community. You can access these below by clixking on the link.

Some of the key points that are addressed in these policies are:

  • Our canteen menu has been assessed by the Healthy Together Eating Advisory Service and meets the requirements of the Department of Education and Training's School Canteen and Other School Food Services Policy
  • Students at Surfside participate in regular physical activity. We were the regional winners of Walk to school in 2013.
  • We are a Sunsmart school. Hats are compulsory in term 1 and 4, on high risk days, and for any special outdoor activities.
  • Surfside Primary School is a smoke free enviroment and all school events are also smoke free.
  • We are a Kids Matter school and place importance on the mental health and wellbeing of our staff, students and community members.
  • We have a comprehensive curriculum that includes social and emotional learning, sexual health and wellbeing, alcohol and other drugs, physical health, personal safety, respect and tolerance, kitchen, garden and sustainability
  • Our school complies with the Child safe standards to ensure all children feel safe and protected.
  • Students at Surfside Primary School are active participants in our organisation. We involve them when making decisions, especially about matters that directly affect them. We listen to their views and respect what they have to say.
  • We promote diversity and tolerance in our organisation, and people from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds are welcome.
  • We aim to "Grow Great Kids."
