School Council
School councils play a vital role in Victorian Government Schools. Participating as a school council member is a rewarding and challenging experience. The school council supports the Principal to provide the best possible educational outcomes for students.
School Councils have three main responsibilities:
- Finance – help create and check the school’s budget
- Strategic Planning – contribute to the school strategic plan
- Policy Development and Review – make decisions on policies like investments, payments by parents, dress code, etc
Other key functions of School Council include:
- raising funds for school related purposes
- maintaining school grounds and facilities
- entering into contracts
- reporting annually to the school community and Department
- representing and taking the views of the community into account
- regulating and facilitating after-hours use of the school premises and grounds
- operating a children’s service at the school.
2022 School Council Members
School councils usually have between six and 15 members (as outlined and determined by enrolment numbers in accordance to Ministerial Order No. 1293 – Surfside PS school council consists of 11 members – 7xParent 3xDET & 1xCo-opted.)
- The Principal, who is the executive officer
- Parents who are chosen through nomination and election if required
- School or Department of Education staff members
- Co-opted member – selected via school council for area of expertise or knowledge base
- Students from the school student leadership team present on a rotational basis regarding student voice and agency at Surfside Primary School.
