Numeracy
In numeracy at Surfside Primary School skills and concepts are developed through explicit teaching in both whole class and small focus groups. Our teaching emphasises that numeracy skills are involved in all aspects of our lives and students extend these skills and understanding through engagement in problem solving in real life situations.
While much of the teaching of concepts and skills to support numeracy happens within explicit numeracy sessions, it is strengthened as students take part in activities that connect their learning in the mathematics classroom within the context of other curriculum areas.
As our students move through their years of schooling, students are exposed to mathematical proficiencies through developing:
- Understanding
- Fluency
- problem solving
- Reasoning
These proficiencies allow students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematics to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently.
We work on developing our student’s perceptions of mathematics through building resilience and perseverance in attempting challenging real life tasks.
